They explain why a story interests its audience; and how editors and other journalists decide that one piece of information is news while another is not. there are a number of different news values that make sure a content which is published by a journalists is of a good standard.

Compare and contrast Galtung and Ruge theory with Harcup & O’neils (2001) theory.

Both Galtung and Ruge and Harcup and O’neil conducted research to identify what news editors should and do look for in a story to decide wether a story is newsworthy or not.

Harcup and O’neil have some different values but still believe that the values are what makes something newsworthy or not.

In 1965 Gultung and Ruge conducted research into what news values are important . So when deciding whether a story is newsworthy the editor would think about whether the story has enough news values.

In 2001 Harcup and O’neill updated the news values, they conducted their research and those were the outcome. They’re similar in the fact that they refer to elite persons e.g. celebrities or people high up, also continuity are similar to H&O’s ‘Follow up’ news values.  However they are different because Gultung and Ruge’s aren’t really characteristics , where as Harcup and O’neill’s are more modern, like celebrities which are more in the news now a days.

G&O’s news values:

Frequency- Events that happen frequently are more likely to be covered.

Threshold- Events that have impact – large numbers involved e.g murders, natural disasters.

The main difference between both values is that G+R values are more professional where as in H+N are more casual when written a news story. There are also more news values in G+R beliefs where H+N don’t have has many like
