Feature Writing

You turn up on a Sunday morning, the nets up, teas and coffees ready to go and the pitch marked out.

All the players have to do is turn up and play the game.

However what people don’t see is the work that goes on behind the scenes hours before kick off.

This is where the Grassroots football awards come in, recognising the generous people who give up their time to make sure these games can go ahead.

There were over 100 nominations where just 14 winners were chosen including Shelley FC who were the grounds team of the year.

The committed ground staff are up at 6:00 am on Sunday mornings getting the pitches ready and putting the nets up.

Uriah Rennie, county FA chairman said “This year in particular we wanted to nominate Ash and his team as the work they did to ensure the finals went ahead this year was excellent.

The weather leading up to finals day, and on the day itself was very poor – rain, wind, hail, you name it we got it.

The Grounds team at Shelley were out at 6.00am getting the pitches ready for us and putting up nets etc.

They worked tirelessly all through the event to ensure all the games went ahead despite the horrendous conditions. We wish to thank them for their efforts.”

Also among the winners was Jim Liversidge who was presented with the volunteer of the year award.

Mr Rennie said “Jim spends all his time at the recreation ground ensuring that the facilities are suitable for the teams.

This has not been easy with the run down of the local Miners Welfare who should have been supporting the ground financially”.

Grassroots club of the year was given to Tinlsey FC.

The club has supported players  not just with excellent coaching but also supported them financially too.

Other award winners were Melissa Burgin who received young referee of the year award, and Lawrence Clarke who received the Derek Dooley award.

Intrusion into grief or shock –

Reporting suicide – When reporting suicide, steps must be taken to avoid excessive detail of the method used, while taking into account the media’s right to report legal proceedings.

There is a public interest in the reporting of suicide as it remains a significant public health concern – it is the leading cause of death in people under the age of 35 in the UK. The death of an individual is a matter of public record and a death may affect a community as well as those who knew the individual personally. Journalists have a basic right to report the fact of a person’s death, even if surviving family members would prefer for there to be no reporting and regard the death as private.
