In the future i’m wanting to be a sports journalist. Whether thats writing for a news paper, broadcasting on the radio or being a presenter i want to report sports more specifically football. i want to go into sports journalism as i have a keen interest on most sports such as football. cricket, golf and a few more. i like the idea of watching sport and speaking about it as a job as i believe id enjoy it.
There are a few different options i have that can lead me into the career i want such as university, the NCTJ course or an apprenticeship. if i were to go to university then the course i would choose would be the sports journalism course at Sheffield hallam. id choose this course as it would mean that i could stay at home and study on a course thats specifically for the career id like to go into.
Another option that i have is the NCTJ course which is recognised by most news outlets. this course is a six month intensive course which will give me things that i need to be a journalist such as short hand. As i’m wanting to report on sport shorthand is really important as if i’m reporting on a live press conference then i’ll need to get things written down quickly while the conference is still going on. because of my age i will have to pay for the course where as usually i wouldn’t have to however i still feel the NCTJ is one of the best options for me.
Getting an apprenticeship would also be a good option for me to take. I fell that the best way to learn is to actually do the job that i’m wanting to do so getting an apprenticeship at a newspaper or radio station then that would be good for my progression. Although apprenticeships are hard to come by in journalism it something that i’m seriously considering for my next step.
One skill that id say I’ve got is confidence. I believe that if I had to ring someone or meet someone to ask for an interview or do an actual interview I would be capable of doing that. If I didn’t have the confidence then that could potentially be a barrier when trying to get interviews for a certain piece I plan on writing. Its good that i have a lot of confidence as most things that i do in the career i want to go in will need me to be confident. wether its doing an interviews or doing a live stream about an upcoming game i will have to have a lot of confidence.
Skills that i will need to develop are things such as my interviewing techniques. in the past i’ve not done much interviewing and the only way i can develop these skills is by doing more of it i plan to carry out more interviews to get mire experience on what sort of questions i ask and where to get the interviewee to sit.
Another thing i would like to do is gain some more work experience in some sort of news room or at a radio station. Previously the only work experience i’ve done is on my own writing my own match reports on games that i’ve been to. Although i’m getting a little experience from that i don’t have anyone to tell me how i could improve where as if i were in a workplace then i could ave someone to give me feedback.
I feel social media will be a big part of my carer as a sports journalist as it will be how i build the majority of my audience. i can use social media to build my following so that when i publish a piece of content i can share it on things such as twitter and people can see it. the more people that follow me then the more people that will view my content. Its also the more of a chance that my piece of content can be shared.
Im planning on doing my FMP on football so i can use this as an opportunity to develop my skills and put them on show as well. Im doing my FMP on football as it something that id like to into in the future so i’m going to take this chance to gain new skills and improve on the ones that i already have.
