Blog post 1: Research and Planning- 7.1.1, 7.1.2 (Deadline 14/12/18)

Purpose and conventions of interactive info graphics.

Infographics  are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly.

infographics make finding certain pieces of information easier to find. fir example if your trying to find a set of statistics or some data for a specific topic then using an inforgraphic would make that task easier.

Ways of making an infographic.

Their are many different website that offer different template for you to make an interactive inforgraphic. websites like istock and infogram offer hundreds f different ways your could set up an inforgraphic quick and easily.

before actually finding a template you need the actual data that will be used for the infographic. You need the skills to be able to go on the internet and find the facts and piece of information you want. If your are able to pick out the correct pieces of information then your half way there to making a good infographic.

My Topic

I plan on basing my interactive infographic on young people and gambling in 2017.

By doing this topic I can use statics for things like the amount of underage people gamble and the amount of money they gamble.

I will also see how each age differs when it comes to gambling such as 11-17 year olds. I can look at each age and see what and how they gamble and include it in my info graphic.

To make it interactive I can include several links two different website that as information about under aged gambling. This is useful as my information can be used but if the person reading mine wants to learn more then I have given them easily accessible further information.

Their is already a large amount of data about underage gambling which can be useful when it comes to making my own infographic. There are many articles and website like the one below that i can use to source my information from. i can make my infographic interactive by linking these different articles as well.

Examples of different template.

Below is a few templates that I would use for my interactive infographic as I feel they come across the best and are effective for the type of information I am using.

I feel like these two examples are good for different reasons.

The first one as I feel it’s set out in a good and effective way. Even if it’s not the most I catching it, it’s still organised very well.

The second example is eye catching and I think that would appeal to people when looking at different infographics. While being eye catching it also get information across well.

Infographic Evaluation

Infographic evaluation

To begin with we were given a few topics that we could base our interactive infographic on. For example, we could have chosen from things like the top ten things to do in Sheffield or how 16-19-year olds use social media. I didn’t chose these as I felt like I didn’t have enough knowledge on the topics whereas the topic I did chose I already knew quite a bit about.

For my infographic I chose to do underage gambling as there are many different pieces of data that I can use to make mine of a good standard.

The main source of information that I used to do my research was from the site below:

https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/PDF/survey-data/Young-People-and-Gambling-2017-Report.pdf

Using this site allowed me to choose from hundreds of different pieces of data to use for my info graphic. It had different stats and statistics from previous years on underage gambling which helped me to create my piece of data for this assignment.

To actually create my Interactive infographic, I used a website called Vengage. I felt like I used this website effectively as I used a lot of the features that it offered. For example, I chose to include bar chart and pie graphs to represent certain pieces of data.

I feel like one thing I could improve on would be my planning before starting my infographic. If I had done some planning beforehand on what I wanted it to look like and what features I wanted it to have then it would have been of a better standard.

In my opinion the actual information in it is good and will be of interest I feel and how it comes across in the infographic is clear and easy to read.

As a whole I think my Interactive infographic was done to a good enough standard however I feel like if I was to do this again in the future then I would be able to improve on a few things like I’ve talked about above.

To make my infographic interactive I added a link to another website which gives a lot of other facts and figures on underage gambling. However when you click on the link it doesn’t take you to the website so I will include it below.

Screen Shot 2018-11-30 at 11.39.21.png

To make this assignment a high level it would be good to get interviews and i think getting an interview with someone connected to Sheffield FC than someone who was connected to Wednesday or united would be more achievable.

I like this video as it gives you an insight of what its really like to be involved in the runnings of a football club.

Id like to use a lot of these different shot types and angles in my short video about Sheffield FC. when doing my interview ill use a medium or a medium close up shot. ill sit either to the left or right of the camera so the person whos being interviewed isn’t looking directly into the camera when answering questions as that would be quite awkward for the viewer.

Video journalism Evaluation

To start off with I had to think of a topic that I wanted to make my short video about. Originally, I wanted to base mine around the growth of woman’s football. As I wanted to film an interview with someone who was involved with a woman’s football club I had to get in touch with people. I sent an email to Sheffield FC to enquire about speaking to someone who was involved in their woman’s team such as a coach or player.

After waiting around a week for a reply I didn’t hear anything, so I had to change my plan as the deadline was getting closer. I changed my plan to do a video on Sheffield Wednesday and took the angle of their FA cup memories as they had a big FA cup tie coming up.

The primary research that I did were interviews with some Wednesday fans. I interviewed three fans asking them all the same questions to see how their opinions varied. I recorded these interviews to include in my short video. I also used some of my own videos of the fans at a recent away FA cup match at Chelsea.

Other things that I put in the video were short clips of Sheffield Wednesdays best bits in the FA cup off of YouTube which I can play over my fan interviews. I will attach the links below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kV2qDAKPWA&t=17s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLCbv5a6yZ8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tgsHJloiuM

One of the main problems I had was actually getting my interviews for my video. To begin with I was prepared and attempted to get my interviews early when I emailed Sheffield FC however when I didn’t get a reply it meant I had to start my video idea all over again so I couldn’t stick to my original schedule. In the future I probably wouldn’t wait as long for my replies so that if I didn’t get replies then I still had time to come up with another plan.

I would also come up with a backup plan to have ready if this did happen again which I cold jut get on with rather than easting time trying to come up with a whole new idea and angel to take for my video.

Another problem I had was actually editing my video as when I had my footage I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with it once I was on the editing software. I spent a large amount pf time messing about with the clips I had and tying different thing that in the end I had to rush  and it probably wasn’t of the best standard.

If I was to do this again then I would use my storyboards more effectively as I would be able to have a clear plan on how I wanted my video to look and how I wanted it to come across.

Sports journalism

Manchester United’s good start to week ends in disaster as they fall to defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Manchester City.

Team News

Benjamin Mendy and kyle walker start at full back as Manchester city start with a front three of Sterling, Aguero and Mahrez.

Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini are brought into the side after Uniteds 2-1 victory over Juventus earlier this week.

Manchester city began brightly with David De Gea having to pull of a good save in the first minute after Bernardo Silvas long range effort.

United couldn’t keep city quite for long though as in the 12th minute they netted there 1st goal. Bernardo silva missed the first effort but David silva followed up with some tricky footwork and a good finish to make it 1-0.

Man city were on top for large portions of the game an they made their dominance count when Sergio Aguero fired in a 2nd.

good link up play between him and Mahrez caused Man utd to crumble.

Changes were made from the away side as Lukaku came on for Jesse Lingard.

shortly after he was involved with his first touch of the match winning a penalty, city keeper Emerson bringing him down in the area.

Martial converted from the spot in the 58th minute and gave the visitors a fighting chance.

United didn’t do anything with that chance though as in the 86th minute substitute Ikay Gundogen put the game to bed.

Initial proposal (unit 5)

My initial idea is to make a panel podcast with a few friends speaking about football.

I feel its a good topic to make a podcast about as there a lot that we can speak about and it can reach out to a wide audience.

i could talk about different leagues, different clubs and many more things as football is such a massive thing.

Also by having a panel you can get a few different point of views and there would be more discussion than if it were just you and one other person.

I would lead the podcast but allow the rest of the people in it to have time to speak and talk about what they wanted to.

the purpose of the podcast will probably be more entertainment than to inform. i plan on speaking abut the recent Sheffield derby or the championship all round which both of the teams from Sheffield are in.

The target audience would be fans of either teams or just fans of football i general. i think they would find it interesting to hear different peoples point of views.

News values my project could include

  •  Negativity
  • personalisation
  •  conflict
  • time constraints
  • predicability
  • Entertainment
  • Bad news
  • Good news

Editors Code

The Code – including this preamble and the public interest exceptions below – sets the framework for the highest professional standards that members of the press subscribing to the Independent Press Standards Organisation have undertaken to maintain. It is the cornerstone of the system of voluntary self-regulation to which they have made a binding contractual commitment. It balances both the rights of the individual and   the public’s right to know.

To achieve that balance, it is essential that an agreed Code be honoured not only to the letter, but in the full spirit. It should be interpreted neither so narrowly as to compromise its commitment to respect the rights of the individual, nor so broadly that it infringes the fundamental right to freedom of expression – such as to inform, to be partisan, to challenge, shock, be satirical and to entertain – or prevents publication in the public interest.

It is the responsibility of editors and publishers to apply the Code to editorial material in both printed and online versions of their publications. They should take care to ensure it is observed rigorously by all editorial staff and external contributors, including non-journalists.

Editors must maintain in-house procedures to resolve complaints swiftly and, where required to do so, co- operate with IPSO. A publication subject to an adverse adjudication must publish it in full and with due prominence, as required by IPSO.

How i wont breach editors code

The main things i will look out for to make sure i dontt breach the editors code are privacy and accuracy.

Accuracy would mean that everything that is mentioned in the podcast is true and is factually correct. For example if we were to talk about something that is rumoured but in the end wasn’t true then there could be consequences such as legal action for defamation.

Elements

(the ingredients that will make up the podcast)

My Podcast Timings – How long will each part take?

In seconds or minutes

Intro tag

How will you introduce your podcast?

You could write a script for this part of your podcast

e.g. Say who you are.

Introduce myself as the host and the panel who are joining me on the podcast.

What are you going to be talking about?

Talking about football. Mainly championship and local teams like wed and utd

Purpose of the podcast?

Purpose is to debate and inform and entertain people who are listening.

Who are the participants / guests / interviewees?

Me and 3 or 4 from class still TBD

3-5 mins
Intro music jingle

Do you want to use music and, if so, what type of music? How will you access the music? How will you use it?

What feel do you want?

Want it to feel like a debate show or a radio talk show so doesn’t really have to have sound effect or chart music included.

Which music will you use?

Will probably use a 15 second jingle that I can find on the internet that wont breach copyright, nothing specific. I will use the website below to try and find some appropriate intro music.

You can find copyright free music from incompetech.com or audionautix.com.

Your jingle could play under your intro tag.

How will you avoid copyright issues?

I will avoid copyright issues by doing research on any song that I like and that I would like to use. I will use websites such as the ones above that have a selection of copyright free music on.

15- 20 seconds

How do you want each participant to contribute?

I would like to lead the conversation but like the panel to have a decent contribution. Would like a vary of opinions so that there good discussion going on and wouldn’t mid some arguments as that would keep listeners interested.

I don’t just want it to be interviewing them reeling questions off at them. I would like them to be able questions to the panel aswell.

Is there a particular conclusion that you want to reach?

Don’t really want a specific ending to the podcast I just want it to be a good 20-30 minute discussion and when I feel like it needs to be ended then I will wrap the conversation up.

Sheffield is Super

I decided to do my Sheffield is super article on joe Crann who is a journalist who is from Sheffield but now lives in south Africa because of his

To begin with I did think about doing my article on a local charity in Sheffield or a local business but as joe is a journalist it was something relevant to me and something I thought I would enjoy doing.

for primary research i did my interview with him over email. i organised the interview with him over twitter messages as seen below.

Screen Shot 2018-12-06 at 14.57.13.png

some secondary research i did was seeing where joe worked in south Africa. to do this i used is personal website which had more information about him.

https://yeswecrann.co.za/about-me/

problems and solutions

The first problem i had was actually getting in touch with him as he didn’t follow me and i had no direct links to him it was a struggle.

The solution to this was i used twitter to ask him to dm me and within 10minutes he messaged me.

One main problem i had was that at the time of the interview joe was travelling so i had to find the right time to get the answer from him.

My solution to this was i give him my questions in enough time to answer them so i could still make my deadline.

If I was to do this assignment again in the future I would probably do it on a different topic such as a charity in Sheffield or up and coming business. Doing it on just one person makes it quite difficulty to base a full price of sting on him. If it was about a charity I could speak about the People they help and all the money they have raised

I would be able to get interviews off staff and the people they help and include that in my price of writing.

My interview with Joe Crann

When did you realiseImage result for joe crannyou wanted to be a journalist ?

I think I was about 13 or 14 when I decided properly. Like so many other youngsters I had hopes of being a professional footballer. I realised young that I wasn’t good enough to make that happen, so I started making plans to try and make sure I forged a career in the game for myself without actually playing it. Writing was always a passion of mine, so it made sense to pair the two together.

How did you get in to journalism ( college, apprenticeship etc) ?

So my route was maybe a little unorthodox. Early doors I took the normal route… I did Media Studies and English Language/Literature at Sheffield College for my A-Levels, and then went on to complete my NCTJ there towards the end of my teenage years. I embarked on a year-long trip aroundthe world and planned to return home to go to University, however plans changed when I was offered a job in South Africa. I had a choice – study to be a journalist, or just go and be one. I chose the latter.

What/who has been the biggest influence on your career so far?

That’s a tough one really, because there have been many people that have done so. I was lucky that my parents gave me the freedom to pursue my own dreams, lucky to have had some great teachers in my formative years, and truly fortunate that Peter du Toit – the owner of Soccer Laduma – saw something in me and decided to give me a job there. At the risk of sounding cliché though, I’ll say my mum and dad. My drive and desire to explore comes from them, and if it wasn’t for that then I wouldn’t be over here on the other side of the equator right now!

Has living in South Africa had a big difference on you career and if so how?

Yeah, in a huge way. I’ve been here permanently since I was 21 years old, and have been afforded opportunities this side that I think I would really have struggled to get had I stayed in the UK and gone to University. I’m now 28, and have already covered three World Cups, attended African and European continental finals, and forged a real place for myself at the heart of South African football. I simply don’t think I’d have done so much by my age if I hadn’t left.

What’s been the highest and lowest point of your career?

I think that the lowest point was actually while I was doing my NCTJ still and nobody wanted to give me a chance at getting work experience. I made contact with so many people regarding doing unpaid work, and tried to get in touch with some of my favourite journalists for advice, however heard nothing back for so long. That was hard, but it worked out in the end. The highlight was probably being asked to write a piece for FourFourTwo for the first time. FFT was like my bible growing up, so that was huge.

Have you had to overcome anything that you think has made you a better journalist?

To generalise, I think that overcoming the lies that are told in football every day is something that’s made me better. You learn to develop a thick skin when people tell you something isn’t happening when it is, or vice versa. Overcoming that darker side of the industry and coming out on the other side knowing that you’ve kept your integrity and reported honestly is something to be proud of as far as I’m concerned.

Best moment as a Wednesday fan?

Now that’s an easy one! The playoff final when we beat Hartlepool to get back into the Championship. It was the first (and last trophy) I saw us win, and being in Cardiff that day was something else. The fact that there were so many Wednesdayites that day made it even better. Brilliant day out.

Thanks!

Secondary information

The Article

Joe Crann is a local lad who is now travelling the world doing the job that he always wanted to do. I decided to do my Sheffield Is Super article on him to learn a but more about the now south African based sports journalist.

As i am someone whos at college wanting to get into journalsim the first question i asked was how he himself got into being a journalist.

he replied, “So my route was maybe a little unorthodox. Early doors I took the normal route… I did Media Studies and English Language/Literature at Sheffield College for my A-Levels, and then went on to complete my NCTJ there towards the end of my teenage years. I embarked on a year-long trip around the world and planned to return home to go to University, however plans changed when I was offered a job in South Africa. I had a choice – study to be a journalist, or just go and be one. I chose the latter.”

the main reason i chose Joe for this article is because he gone from living in Sheffield through his early life to now being a high level sport journalist in south Africa.

Because of the move Joe will have had to overcome and push through certain things that had an impact on his career.

I asked him ” Have you had to overcome anything that you think has made you a better journalist?

His reply was “To generalise, I think that overcoming the lies that are told in football every day is something that’s made me better. You learn to develop a thick skin when people tell you something isn’t happening when it is, or vice versa. Overcoming that darker side of the industry and coming out on the other side knowing that you’ve kept your integrity and reported honestly is something to be proud of as far as I’m concerned.”

Unit 4 – Media Regulation Notes

What is IPSO?

IPSO keeps journalism to high standards and ensure that journalists follow the editors code.

they also investigate complains and make sure magazines and newspapers are accounted for there actions.

Editors Code

the press must make sure that they don’t publish any inaccurate information. also if the headline is not supported by the main text, ipso would get involved.

Public Intrest

Public interest is something that people ought to know such as war or something happening in the local area. press cant just write what they want as people may bot be interested in it so they have to find out what people want to know and do their best to cover that subject.

a – you  don’t have permission and he’s under age so u cant take pictures of him

same again with c it breaches harassment clause as he’s under 16 and hasn’t given permission.

i would say c as if you did just go straight to her for an interview you would be assuming hat she’s involved where she could have nothing to do with it. its alway best to make sure with people like the police to cover yourself.

you would be breaching clause 2 and 3 as you would be harassing the person to ry and get   the interview without permission and you would be breaching her privacy as well

i would choose c as both a and b your not asking for permission to take screen shots or take that information out of hat private group. you are breaching the privacy of that group by takin screenshots without them knowing.

a – profile pictures on social media can be screen shotted even though you may not like it, you’ve put it online for everyone to see.  However if hey are under the age of 16 their ay be different rules against

.0032that. you may need a parents permission.

External Regulation

IPSO editors code is an example of internal regulation of the journalism industry.

The sun front page about Jeremy “Cor-bin” seems very biased and against him. In my opinion it does damage his image as he’s supposed to be a professional man in a position of power and they’ve photoshopped him into a bin to embarrass and belittle him.

newspapers are allowed to e biased where as the tv industry has to be impartial. they have to give equal coverage to the two main parties.

if one party has 20 minutes of coverage then the other party has to have that as well.

Ideology – set of beliefs – different newspapers have different idealogy for example the sun has the ideology that we should vote conservative and is really against Labour party.

however a different newspaper could be gains Theresa may and really like Jeremy Corbyn.

broadsheets are biased like tabloids however they do have a bit more detail that tabloids and try to see things from a different point of view.

prince harry photographed at a party where police wee called because of reports of illegal drug abuse

to report on this you would have to be careful of a few things such as defamations and breaching privacy. Nowhere doe it say that the party prince harry was at drugs were actually being taken. The headline says “reports” of illegal drugs abuse which means that its been rumoured but nothings nailed on.

Copyright Law

people who create thing such as music, films, videos get to decide how their material is used. if the person doesn’t agree to you using it, you will not be able to use it.

The law gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, sound recordings, broadcasts, films and typographical arrangement of published editions, rights to control the ways in which their material may be used.

https://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p01_uk_copyright_law

Copyright is legal right that protects the use of your work once your idea has been physically expressed. The current copyright legislation in the UK is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. You can find out more about copyright legislation by visiting the Intellectual Property Office.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/copyrightaware/what-is

X factor winner Matt Cardle sued Ed Sheeran for copying “note-for-note” his song amazing. Ed Sheerans song “photograph is said to sound exactly like the song amazing.

The case did not go to court, instead  Ed Sheeran to payed 1.6 millions pounds as a result of this

Lego won its first copyright case against on of the rival companies to it as the products they had produced were almost identical. As a result of the the two companies from china who make these products must now change there packaging and logos.

Lego is a big name in china so there were no excuses for near enough copying the products. the company who produced the toys did it to receive more money because of how big of a name lego is.

Humans Of Sheffield (news page)

News Page

Allen Colley has worked at the Sheffield college for over 30 years.

In an interview with me he talks about how things have changed in further education and what his future plans are.

Allan (57) studied at Ashleigh school in Sheffield but that’s a distant memory now as he goes into his 34th year of being part of the Sheffield college team.

When asked what the best thing about his job was, he replied

“The people I work with, not just in the media part of the college but all over whether it’s the stag or the students”

Having worked at the college for that amount of time It’s good to see that the students and staff still keep his job interesting on a day to day basis.

According to the news in previous years there have been a lot of changes made in further education however I wanted to ask someone who’s seen these changes first hand.

I asked Alan “what have been the biggest changes you’ve seen in further education over the last few years”

He spoke passionately when he said” The lack of money and investment not just in the media department but the whole college is noticeable.

media has never really had the financial backing but all round finding for the college had been cut”.

He went on to say “ The government doesn’t really like colleges and the longer time goes on the more financial investment is taken away”.

He feels that college “has been demined and is gradually getting more like a school”.

I then asked him about the past and future.

One question I asked was “what the most memorable thing to happen in your life”

He replied “my most memorable time of my life probably would be when my 2 children were born, and maybe getting married to my wife was quite a big day in my lifer as well.

I then asked him about his future.

Having worked at the Sheffield college for over 30 years Allan’s next move is going to be retirement. When asked “where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?” he said

“retired and taking long breaks away in Spain”

He continued to say “I’ve got to the point in my career, where the next thing is retirement. I don’t plan on living in Spain but taking long and frequent breaks to Spain.”

The last thing i asked him was to describe himself in 3 word.

his reply was “massive Wednesday fan”

I would like to thank Allan for giving me his time for this interview.

primary research (The interview)

Name – Allan Colley

Age – 57

Title of the job you do – technical trainer whether its media photography performing arts and something needs doing then I’m there to do it.

How long have you been doing this job for – this is my 34th year

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years – retired and taking longs breaks away in Spain.

What have been the biggest changes you’ve seen in FE – the lack of money and investment. Not just in the media department but college in general. Media has never really had financial backing but all round funding has been cut for college.

Government doesn’t really like colleges and the longer time goes on the more money gets taken away from further educations investment.

Further education has been demined and is gradually getting more like a school.

Gone away from adult education and teaching adults to teaching school kids

Process (Evaluation)

To begin with i planned on interviewing Joe Crann as hes someone who is from Sheffield and has grown up and been able to do great things with his life like travelling the world doing what he wants to do through his job. From doing research its not all been straight forward throughout his career which  why i thought he would be a good person to  interview.

I contacted Joe to see whether he would be up for doing the interview and he said yes. he gave me an email to send my questions to as he currently lives in south Africa. After getting some questions together to ask him i sent them him with around a week until my deadline.

However unfortunately i didn’t receive the replies to the questions in time so i had to find an alternative person interview
