This essay will discuss how two different journalist use their websites promote themselves. I will look at Joe Crann and Robert Hollingowrth to see how they use there website to show their best work and how effective their website is.
Joe Crann has is own website to promote himself. It gives people a chance to see what sort of work he does and find out more about him. Joe is a sports reporter from Sheffield who lives in south Africa so having a website allows people to understand what he does and how He got to where he is.
Joe has five different categories at the top of his website, home where you can find his most popular pieces of writing, his most recent tweets and see who his partners are.
His second category is Joe crann – journalist which is a personal profile. Another category he has is football which includes things such as who he supports, the football teams he reports on in South Africa and football news from the rest of the world. He also has a tab named YWC (yes we crann) where he writes about his “sneaker of the week” for his partners Shelflife. The last category he has on his website is called “other musings” where he puts his other story’s thats arnt really to do with his sports reporting.
The branding that joe uses does show his personality quite well. For example his website is called Yes we Crann and on his logo it says “those who cant play write” referring to playing football. This shows that he is quite witty and has a humorous personality.
His website also gives people a chance to contact him. For example if they’d like to work with him or would like to ask him a question his website gives people that opportunity.
Robert Hollingowrth is a freelance photographer. He is not very active on social media however he has a website that he keeps up to date regularly. It is important as a free lance photographer that he publishes his best work on his website so that potential employers can see what he can do.
He has categories such as films on his website where you can find documentaries and his showreel. Robert also has a photography tab at the top of his page which showcases his his best work as a freelance photographer. He has a category called specialisms where he shows people the behind the scenes of getting an image, such as how he set up his camera or what it’s like being on a shoot.
Roberts website has a very clean look and is easy to read. it all flows very well and is also very modern which is important as it the first thing a potential employer will see. His website comes across as quite serious and professional which could suggest what sort of personality he has.
In conclusion Robert Hollingworths website looks better to the eye and showcases a lot of his best work which is important as a photographer however doesn’t really portray what kind of character he is. On the other hand Joes is a lot more witty and shows what kind of person he is in terms of personality.
I feel that both peoples websites are relevant to what part of journalism they work in as rob is freelance his website is an opportunity for people to see his work where as joes is more about him and getting to know what is like.
